We arrived in Napa on Sunday, early in the day, which was great because we had a lot of time to explore. I had been out in the San Francisco area before, but it was about 17 years ago, and Brad had never been up there before. We headed to the Golden Gate bridge towards Sausalito which was a great little town on the bay. (dad, you would have loved it here...full of cyclers!) We just had lunch and walked around a bit, but it was a really neat little town. After that we put the top of the convertible down and drove towards Sonoma on our way to Napa. 
We couldn't believe the miles and miles of grape vines that you pass! I mean every inch of land is covered in vines! It seems as though everyone makes wine, whether it's in a vineyard, or in their basement, everyone grows grapes (and olive trees as well). There were even grapes growing in the parking lot at the fancy market!
We drove up to St. Helena to hit up the Dean and Deluca (one of those things we miss from NYC) and we laughed at how were sounded like we were celebrity sighting as we passed vineyards "look Mondavi!, Opus One, Cakebread"! Even Coppola's vineyard was right on the strip.
Fact you probably don't know about Napa. No one wants to waste any of the precious soil out here, so the vineyards are all along the highway. 29 runs through all the little towns in the valley and the grapes are right out there. So, the next time you are tasting a wine from the region and you notice a "smoky" flavor, just remember it could be exhaust from a 2008 Sebring.
